Peruvian Air Force Grupo 11 Sukhoi Su-25 Close Attack Aircraft

Located in the North West corner of Peru you will find the Talara Air Base, which is home to the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) Sukhoi Su-25's NATO code name "Frog Foot" these aircrafts are maintained and operated by Grupo 11. The Su-25 was developed by Sukhoi for the Russian Air Force in the early 1980's. The Su-25 is similar to the U.S. Air Force Fairchild Republic A-10 "Tank Buster". The Su-25 share common traits with the early Northrope A-9 design which was the forerunner of the A-10.
Via contacts through a local Peruvian TV Reporter, Mr. Andy Oritz, we were able to speak by phone while visiting Peru back in September 2007 to both Major Olivera and Major Blasi of Grupo 11 to get their feed back about flying the "Frog Foot". Both Pilots mentioned that flying the Su-25 give them a super sense of security should they ever have to fly in actual Close Air Support (CAS) Combat. The Su-25 have been operational with the FAP for over ten years and has recently replaced another Sukhoi model the Su-22 "Fitter".
